City Hall and the Department of Education must drop their absurd plans to remove Columbus Day from the school calendar.

In their rush to rewrite and censor history, the geniuses at the Department of Education are dumbing down the calendar to avoid even a hint of needing to have sophisticated conversations about the total diversity of New York City. And are they ever insulting Italian Americans!

WE MUST RESIST CANCEL CULTURE

My Mom has been gone four years now but her voice is always in my head. “What Would Mama Do?” helps me frame whatever problem or issue needs to be addressed.

Lemme tell you this – she would have been furious over this nonsense about removing Columbus Day from the NYC Schools calendar. “They have the actual history all wrong,” she’d say. “They’re missing the point,” Mama would add. “Not to mention that they look foolish.”

Amen, Mama.

In their rush to rewrite and censor history, the geniuses at the Department of Education are dumbing down the calendar to avoid even a hint of needing to have sophisticated conversations about the total diversity of New York City. And are they ever insulting Italian Americans!

My mother, Francesca Bianchino Sliwa, was the last of 13 children in her family. Beautiful and brilliant, she would have been a major CEO if times were different and if she was able to continue her schooling. Frances was always pushing the boundaries of expectations for first-generation Italian American women. Her strong will became the fire that fueled all of her children’s passions. She personified resilience and determination in everything that she did.

Everything I’ve been able to accomplish, everything you and I are doing in this campaign, is a credit to Mama. From the Bronx to Canarsie to City Hall – Mama is there.

If you agree with what I know Frances would be saying about this Columbus Day nonsense, sign our petition.
