Sheldon Silver was released from prison on Tuesday after he served just eight months of his 6 1/2 year sentence.
Silver was elected and routinely re-elected to the New York State Assembly from 1977 through 2015, to represent the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He was appointed Speaker of the Assembly in 1994 and his tenure at the post spanned the terms of five Governors. Silver was arrested on federal corruption charges in 2015 and convicted of all charges. He was sentenced to 6 1/2 years and fined $1 million, and only served eight months of the term in federal prison in Otisville, New York.
A jury of his peers convicted the former Assembly speaker of using the power of his high office to line his own pockets to the tune of millions. He must be put back in jail.
