Curtis Sliwa for NYC Mayor
Friday, August 6, 12 PM
KEW GARDENS, Queens: Today Mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa will join with community activists in Kew Gardens to protest the construction of a so-called community jail. This project is not only a huge waste of taxpayer money, and at a time when the city is struggling for revenue while dealing with the covid threat but poses a grave threat to the community the city is forcing this on.
WHEN: Friday, August 6 at 12 PM
WHERE: 126-02 82nd Avenue, between Borough Hall & Court House at Queens Blvd. and Live-Streaming: http://
QUOTE: “Keep Rikers open and do not build community jails anywhere in the City,” Curtis Sliwa said. “There is plenty of space on Rikers Island. It can be upgraded. We don’t have the funds to build community jails and no one wants them in their neighborhoods.”
BACKGROUND: The jail, planned to stand 19 stories high, will still only hold a fraction of the inmates that Rikers can hold, the facility it is intended to replace. This new building is an over-priced, over-sized structure that is still inadequate for its intended purpose, only capable of holding 886 inmates. This location also means that inmates released each day will be sent out into the local community, which is primarily residential. This is a formula for disaster as this will lead to increased crime and violence in this community.
Sliwa believes that Rikers should be kept as the city jail, which currently has the room to rehabilitate sections on-site without losing space to hold it’s inmates.
